You can’t control the tiles you draw.
You can control the decisions you make with them.

One Game Every Wednesday
Fern Oliphant has run 130+ tournaments and played with thousands of players, and almost nobody has watched her play.
She plays her four games and talks through every decision as she makes it, right down to the moment she catches her own mistake and says so out loud.
September has five Wednesdays, so Fern recorded a fifth episode on tournament play. How to tell whether you're ready, why she sends every beginner to a local one-day first, what 55 minutes for four games does to your pace, and why the curmudgeon at your table only gets one round with you.
They know the rules.
They’ve taken classes.
They recognize the hands on the card.
And yet, game after game, they find themselves saying the same things:
“I almost had it.”
“I should have switched earlier.”
“I didn’t see that coming.”
The issue isn’t effort or knowledge.
It’s what happens when decisions are made with incomplete information.
American Mah Jongg is a game of uncertainty. You never see the full picture. You make choices based on partial signals, timing, and what hasn’t happened yet.
When those choices are made reactively or out of habit, outcomes start to feel like luck.
Over time, the same patterns repeat:
• Hands are chased too long
• Signals at the table are missed
• Pivots come one turn too late
None of this is obvious in the moment. It only shows up in the results.
Winning players aren’t guessing better.
They’re deciding better.
And that difference compounds.

Nowhere else can you watch winning players think through a whole round out loud. These are the players who win tournaments and run them, and Behind the Tiles brings you a different one every month. You see more than one good way to decide, and the judgment ends up being yours.

That's what the Strategy Sessions are for.
Phyllis runs one every Monday at 3pm Eastern and Max runs one every Wednesday at 7pm Eastern, both live on Zoom, and Club members can attend as many as they want.
You bring a hand you couldn't sort out, you ask the question you've been carrying since last week, and you talk through the decision out loud while somebody who plays well is listening.
These are live group sessions, not private lessons and not a rules class, and you can book up to 30 days ahead.
On their own, the Sessions are $149 a year.
Inside the Club, they're included. Fifty dollars more than the Sessions alone gets you Behind the Tiles every Wednesday and everything in the Association on top.
It’s a place for players who already know how to play, and want to play better.
• Observing how experienced players think through real decisions
• Seeing what gets ruled out, not just what gets chosen
• Applying those insights in your own games over time
This isn’t about playing more aggressively or chasing every opportunity. It’s about making fewer costly decisions and letting the game unfold in your favor.
It’s consistency.
And consistency is what wins more games.

There are no modules, worksheets, or step-by-step systems to complete.
It’s not a rules refresher or a place to learn how to play American Mah Jongg from the beginning.
And it’s not about chasing every possible hand or playing more aggressively.
The Club doesn’t promise perfect games or guaranteed wins. It doesn’t try to eliminate luck or turn Mah Jongg into something it isn’t.
Instead, it offers something more realistic, a way to think more clearly at the table, even when the tiles don’t cooperate.
If you’re looking for instruction, this may not be the right fit.
If you’re looking to improve judgment and consistency over time, it probably is.
